Usage in Battle[]

The StuG III is an excellent, well-rounded German vehicle capable of dispatching most foes. Low-profile, decently armored and extremely well-armed for its cost, the Sturmgeschütz is useful in a wide range of scenarios. Despite lacking a turret, the StuG is very capable on the offensive.

While this unit is excellent throughout the game, it is important to note that heavy tanks and tank-destroyers can pose a serious threat. Anything with a high-caliber anti-tank gun (17-pounder, 90mm, 122mm) should be avoided. The StuG will struggle to penetrate most heavy tanks at range.

Assault Gun[]

The StuG's strong frontal-armor for its weight class and two machine-guns make it an adept assaulter. Alongside a squad of infantry, this unit can effectively press an attack against an enemy position. The Sturmgeschütz does best in more open environments, where its lack of a turret is less of an issue. Keeping the enemy in front of the vehicle is a given; two MGs and a 75mm gun allow for superior firepower. However, enemy heavy tanks (Churchills, IS-1, Sherman Jumbo) can resist its gun. Be aware of the opposition before attacking; heavy AT guns and enemy tank destroyers can pose a serious threat, as can AT-equipped infantry.

Tank Destroyer[]

Combining good armor with a great gun, the StuG can be used effectively as a tank-hunter. Keep the unit away from the frontline until an enemy tank reveals itself; reposition into an advantageous position, and engage the enemy armor. In doing this, the Sturmgeschütz is very effective at breaking enemy assaults. Pounce on an enemy attack, disable their armor, and use the machine-guns to sweep up enemy infantry.

Pros & Cons[]

Pros[]

+ Great mid-caliber cannon

+ Two machine guns, unusual for turretless vehicles

+ Roof-mounted remote-control MG-42 has 360-degree rotation; excellent for engaging infantry or flank-attacks.

+ Decent mobility

+ Good armor for its class; sideskirt panels can help protect against rockets

Cons[]

- Somewhat expensive (600 MP)

- No turret; damage to tracks can cripple the vehicle

- Poor side & rear armor; AT-Rifles can pose a threat if side-panels are lost

Trivia[]

The roof mounted machine-gun is an invulnerable "turret" - it has collision with projectiles, and has an armor-value of 5. Penetrating hits to this machine-gun will deal no damage to the unit.
