France was one of the strongest military powers after the outbreak of World War I. Its disciplined, technology-influenced British infantry made the European nations more prolific. However, their lack of preparation and military spending on the Maginot Line would cost them money to fortify and arm their troops with enough equipment to carry out the German invasion.

Frances lack of preparation and confidence in the Maginot Line cost them dearly. The German invasion of the Netherlands in 1940 was thought of as a French bluff. It was not until three weeks later that Paris was besieged and had to be handed over to the French who had underestimated Germany. However, Free France rose and fought alongside the allies in numerous campaigns for the rest of the war.
